Bugs take over the Imax® Screen at Carnegie Science Center Big bugs, small bugs, pretty bugs, and creepy bugs—since last month, insects have ruled the screen at Carnegie Science Center, as Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure made its Pittsburgh premiere. The movie features more than 40 real insects, some magnified up to 250,000 times their normal size, and focuses on the life cycles of a preying mantis and a butterfly from their birth to their inevitable encounter in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia where predator meets its prey. The movie shows the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly, and shows a preying mantis snap up a fly for its dinner— a giant screen first. A variety of other tropical animals make their way across the gigantic screen, including tarantulas, scorpions, vipers, and Jungle Nymphs, as well as a million bats as they flit through the jungle in search of insects, which they consume nightly by the ton. The 40-minute film was shot on location in the jungles of Borneo and in a United Kingdom studio where a microcosm of a tropical rainforest was replicated for extreme close-ups. Director Mike Slee (IMAX® 2D films Wildfire—Feel the Heat, Legend of Loch Lomond) shot the film from a bug’s perspective, as they weave their way through blades of grass, travel across the leaves of a tropical rainforest, flit across the rainforest canopy, or skitter across the sand on the ocean’s edge where an equatorial sunset suffuses the screen with gold. Dame Judi Dench narrates the film. Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure is sponsored by TERMINIX. Bugs! opened last month and runs through Spring 2007. Tickets are $8.00 adults, $6.00 children (3- 12) and seniors (62+), and may be purchased online. For more information, visit www.CarnegieScienceCenter.org or call 412-237-3400. Current
