Monroeville Celebrates Pittsburgh’s Birthday Too! This year marks the 250th Anniversary of Pittsburgh and the metro area that encompasses the city and the region. One can only imagine what the first visitors, probably traders, thought when they gazed upon the land down at the point where two rivers come together to form a third. What they saw were the rivers and the valleys and the forests. What they could not see were the assets that lay undiscovered beneath the earth. With the help of the immigrants that came a hundred years later, a formidable city would indeed be built. In 1807, the Northern Turnpike, a modern highway for that day and time, was completed and linked Philadelphia in the eastern part of the state with Pittsburgh in the west. Monroeville, with its convenient location, became the first stagecoach stop heading east on the new road. However, it was the advent of the Pennsylvania Turnpike that really caused Monroeville to be jump-started economically. In 1950, it was designated as the Pittsburgh Interchange for Pittsburgh and literally became the gateway to Pittsburgh and the west. This issue brings attention to the eastern suburb of Monroeville. With its closeness to downtown (only 13 miles from the Point), Monroeville is much more than just your ordinary satellite community to a large city. Monroeville has much to offer, including its own convention and trade show facility, the Pittsburgh ExpoMart at Monroeville together with the Radisson hotel that is attached. There are many other choices for lodging and accommodations, as well as for fine dining to fast food, and the Monroeville Mall for great shopping. Monroeville even has its own convention bureau that markets the area. Since opening its doors in September 1987, the mission of the Convention Visitors Bureau of Greater Monroeville has been to increase the number of tourists, visitors, and conventioneers that discover and come to Monroeville. They just might be succeeding. With Monroeville, you can get Pittsburgh too!
