Point Marks 25th Anniversary This issue of Pittsburgh Point magazine marks the 25th Anniversary of publishing by Scott Publishing. Published bi-monthly for the first two years and distributed in the Monroeville area, Point has grown to be the most widely accepted visitors magazine in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Someone once said, find a need and fill it. The object of Point has always been to serve as a guide and to direct visitors, tourists, and out-of-towners to just some of what this city and area has to offer. In writing this article to somewhat mark an achievement, I went back to the very first issue of Point. In the beginning the name of the magazine was spelled Pointe, to offer something unique in the name. The ”e” was dropped after two years, which was hastened by a possible lawsuit from a hotel/resort in Phoenix, Arizona. I was assured by local legal counsel that we could prevail in court, but with two sons soon approaching college age, I thought the better of it. Dropping the “e” wasn’t that big of a deal to me since someone was always calling the office and mispronouncing the name. Adding the Pittsburgh above Point came later and gave instant identity and credibility when dealing out of state and in other parts of the country. Outside of the “e” being dropped, going monthly after the first two years, and expanding into the Greater Pittsburgh Area and Allegheny County, we’ve tried keeping with the original concept. Brief and to the point (no pun intended) with every issue. It appears, now that this milestone has been reached, that this approach has been successful. Getting back to that first issue, I can’t get over how much things have changed, with businesses that aren’t there anymore. Vol. 1, No. 1 carried advertising from Jimmy Monzo’s, Ice Palace, Victoria Station, Al Monzo’s Howard Johnson’s, and Holiday House, all long gone from the local scene. Scheduled to appear at the Holiday House were Frankie Avalon, Peaches & Herb, and Sister Sledge (We Are Family). Now would seem to be a good time to thank God from whom all blessings flow. And to say thank you to the businesses and people, who have over the years, believed in us and in the Point. And finally, thank you to all the readers, visitors and residents, who have found Point to be a helpful guide to one of America’s great cities. A. Robert Scott
