It's Been Quite a Year... During the last decade of the 90s, the Pittsburgh Penguins of the Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr era regularly competed for hockey’s holy grail, the Stanley Cup. However, cycles being what they are, the Pens fell on hard times. Last month though, the Pens were again in the playoffs for the first time since 2001. This happened one year after finishing last in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. Make no mistake about it, this is a young, talented team on the rise, with a future. The names now are Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Jordan Staal, as well as others. How much of the future is now remains to be seen. If the Pens get by or got by their first opponent, the Ottawa Senators, then Go Pens! After all, this is being written in April. If the month of May finds them no longer skating, then congratulations on a remarkable, turn-around year. Also, after lobbying seven years for a new facility, a deal was struck in March. Construction is underway on the new $290 million arena that will be their new home the latter part of next year.
Meanwhile, before it was known as the Steel City, Pittsburgh was America’s Glass City. The region reflects on this in a yearlong celebration known as “Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass.” For information, visit the web site at www.pittsburghcelebrates.org. About the Cover Anyone for lunch? There should be after looking at this month’s cover of Jimmy John’s. If the sandwiches look good, it’s because they are. The turkey is real turkey, the roast beef is real roast beef—no additives or fake stuff on any of it. Yes Virginia, there is a Jimmy John… Jimmy John Liautaud to be exact. He started the business in 1983 as a 19-yearold kid, and as they say, the rest is history. The stores now number about 500 with the Pittsburgh location situated downtown at 506 Liberty Avenue in the heart of the Golden Triangle. Try Jimmy John’s. You’ll like them. A. Robert Scott
