Pittsburgh and the Countryside to the North Pittsburgh is celebrating its 250th Anniversary all year. It will culminate in November—when the city got it name 250 years ago in November 1758. To mark this historical event, the region is celebrating an elaborate, year-long celebration. For Pittsburgh is much more than a city. It’s an area in western Pennsylvania that spreads out from Pittsburgh as the spokes of a wheel do forming a metropolitan area and beyond. Included is Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and the cities and towns and communities to the south, east, west to Ohio, and north, up the I-79 corridor into the surrounding counties. This issue we’d like to direct you to the area and countryside north of Pittsburgh.
One could even follow the trek that George Washington took through the county in 1753. Situated in the southwestern corner of the county at the Turnpike and I-79 is Cranberry Township. Here you’ll find an abundance of shopping, dining, and hotels and motels. Just a little further north and hugging the Ohio border is Mercer County. Mercer County is home to worldrenowned shopping destinations, topranked golf courses, award-winning lodging, the scenic Amish countryside, and more. Named ‘Most Livable City’ last year by Places Rated Almanac, Pittsburgh indeed, though often overlooked and underappreciated, has much to offer. As do its neighbors. If you’re here now, have a great visit. And if your plans and travel direction permit, allow for a quick side trip to the north. Finally, this month is the 27th Anniversary of Pittsburgh Point magazine. Let me take this opportunity to thank all of our advertisers, past and present, for helping Point become the valuable and helpful guide that it is. Current
