Adventures Await in Butler County, Just North of Pittsburgh

Just 20 minutes north of downtown Pittsburgh is Butler County. Here you’ll find the largest man-made lake in Pennsylvania, national historic landmarks, nostalgic antique shops, fabulous fairs and festivals, over a dozen golf courses, and countless quirky attractions.

“Butler County’s towns are our biggest assets because they are filled with one-ofa- kind places that make our area unique,” said Jack Cohen, executive director of the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau. “Visitors can find everything from remarkable spaceships and rare historical relics to unusual gift shops and extraordinary restaurants.”

History
History is a prominent player in the appeal of Butler County. Harmony, a National Historic Landmark District, is home to more than 50 buildings, including the Harmony Museum. Harmony also claims a quirky cemetery with a one ton revolving stone gate and no grave markers! The Maridon Museum features an extensive world-class collection of Asian art dating back to the Neolithic period through the present. Jade and ivory sculptures and German Meissen porcelains are displayed. The Butler County Heritage Center has rotating exhibits that focus on county history, concentrating on the 1941 Bantam original military “jeep,” developed in Butler County.

The Great Outdoors
As the home of Moraine State Park, the third-largest park in the state, the county offers a myriad of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, hiking, biking, swimming, and hunting. Outdoor adventure doesn’t stop at Moraine—hike on the North Country Trail, learn about nature at Jennings Environmental Center or sleep under the stars at one of the many campgrounds.

Golfing
Butler County is a prime location forgolfing, with 15 courses located within 30 minutes of each other. Golfers will find both newer and long-established courses that offer a challenge for any skill level.

Agriculture
Agriculture is an important part of the county’s tourism industry. In October, the Farm Tour gives visitors an insider’s view of several different farms. Marburger Dairy offers tours of its operations. We also have two alpaca farms which let you get nose-tonose with these silky and exquisite creatures. Butler County even has its own brand of products, called “You Can’t Buy Better Than Butler.” Look for the the Butler Brand label to find these homemade/homegrown treats. Products include, but certainly aren’t limited to, fruits, vegetables, spices, sauces, flour, coffee, and more!

Butler County is the Main Event
The Butler County Fair, one of the largest in Pennsylvania, is held annually over July 4th. Visitors always enjoy the animals, events, and entertainment. The Regatta at Lake Arthur, held in early August, is one of Butler County’s signature events, featuring the “Whatever Floats Your Boat” contest.
