Festival Downtown for the 49th Time This month, for the 49th time, the Three Rivers Arts Festival takes place. For the greater part of the month, June 6-22, nearly 600,000 people will attend. Taking place in the downtown streets, plazas, and open spaces of Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle, the summer swings into high gear with 300-plus artists in the Artists Market, as well as popular concerts every day and evening, public art, and special exhibitions.
Musical artists scheduled to appear include sax master Maceo Parker, Phoebe Snow, Grammy Award-winning singer Shelly Lynne, and many others. The mission of the festival is to connect the community to the arts. You can learn more about the festival by calling 412-281-8723 or by visiting their web site at www.artsfestival.net. This year Pittsburgh is celebrating its 250th Anniversary. The celebration culminates in November—when the city received its name 250 years ago in November 1758. But Pittsburgh is much more than the city itself. It includes Allegheny County and the surrounding area that is made of towns, villages, small cities and boroughs that are part of Western Pennsylvania. For the second of two back-to-back issues, we’re focusing on the area north of Pittsburgh, specifically Butler County. Bordering Allegheny County to the north, Butler County is where one can enjoy wide open country, rolling hills with picturesque scenery, and warm down-to-earth people. Here you’ll find lush green golf courses, farm lands, and trails and parks. This special focus is found on pages 20-23. If your schedule allows, spend a little time in Butler County. After all, even George Washington did in 1753. Finally, as always, welcome and have a great visit. Current
