Visit Pittsburgh What’s in a name? Everything. I was reminded of this last month when the local agency that promotes Pittsburgh as a destination came to realize that. Formerly known as the Greater Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau, it’s now taken on the much more contemporary name of VisitPittsburgh. Sounds kind of clean, don’t you think? The original name was quite a mouthful. Besides that, there was the constant confusion between the bureau and the David L.Lawrence Convention Center. Hopefully that will now clear up. VisitPittsburgh should say it all! On Tuesday, July 11th, the Pirates will host the 77th annual All-Star Game at PNC Park. The 2006 games marks the fifth time that the Pirates and the city of Pittsburgh have hosted the Midsummer Classic. This ties a record for major league teams. PNC Park becomes the third different venue to host the event in Pittsburgh, Forbes Field and Three Rivers Stadium being the others. Across town, along the Monongahela River on the South Side, visitors can find a really unique neighborhood. Coursing right through the center of this section of Pittsburgh is East Carson Street. Here, visitors and residents can find some of the very best dining in the city, or anywhere for that matter. You’ll also find vintage clothing shops, art galleries, and cozy night spots & coffee bars that offer plenty of day and evening fun. Carson Street is the connection between two of the city’s most popular attractions—Station Square just across the Smithfield Street Bridge and the South Side Works at the other end of Carson Street. Featured on this month’s cover for this busy month of July is the National Aviary. Conveniently located across from Downtown and just five blocks from PNC Park, the aviary is a one-of-a-kind attraction. The aviary is the only independent indoor non-profit facility of this type in the United States and it’s home to more than 200 species. The aviary is open year-round, it’s indoors, and oh yes, parking is free. Finally, a very warm welcome to all of you that may be visiting the city, whether it be for the All-Star Game, or whatever other reason for being here. As always, we hope that your stay is both pleasant and enjoyable. We hope that you find Point to be a helpful guide. A. Robert Scott
