PUBLISHER'S PAGE - Time for Another Start

Happy New Year! No, that’s not a misprint. But when September comes, to me it’s like the beginning of a new year.

The summer is ending, vacations are over, the kids have returned to school, it’s business as usual, and things have returned to normal.

Here in Pittsburgh, we can look forward to the last throes of summer with warm days, blue sapphire skies, and cool nights.

As early as late July the Pirates had settled into last place but continue to draw nice crowds to PNC Park.

Dave Wannstedt is the new head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh and opens the season this month at Heinz Field in a nationally televised game against Notre Dame. The new coach has installed a new run-first, physical offense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers open the season at home against Tennessee followed two weeks later here against New England.

Congratulations to Dan Marino who entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month. Dan grew up in the Oakland section of the city, just a short walk from old Pitt Stadium where he played four years before going to the Miami Dolphins where he played for 17 seasons.

Marino is the fourth player from Pitt to enter the Hall, joining Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, and Joe Schmidt.

After a one-year absence, hockey returns later this month, the pre-season variety, and for real in October.

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to have hit the jackpot by winning the National Hockey League’s draft lottery in late July.

His name is Sidney Crosby and he appears to be the most celebrated hockey player to come along since Mario Lemieux and has been compared to Wayne Gretsky. There is a real buzz in town over this.

September and October not only is the time of the year when seasons seem to collide, but the sports seasons do too. It’s a great time to be visiting Pittsburgh.

There are some great restaurants here and many can be found in the Dining Section, not the least of which is Isabela on Grandview. This award-winning restaurant is reviewed in this issue. After reading the review, I heartily recommend this restaurant to our readers. It’s a great place to dine and to enjoy the city view below.

Also included in this issue is a special section beginning on page 20 that focuses on the AIRPORT AREA.

Welcome.
