Pittsburgh: Someplace Special
Unique Neighborhoods

Anyone from Pittsburgh or who’s ever lived in the area knows that the city is composed of neighborhoods… some ninety of them. But even those who are from the area probably have never been to all of them. This month’s issue of Point is going to direct your attention to two of them. First, perhaps one of the best known of these neighborhoods is South Side. Originally known as Birmingham, South Side had at its core the steel mills and the church.

Coursing through the heart of the district is East Carson Street, a throw-back in its look to the 50s. With its mix of shops and galleries, fine restaurants to fast-food, bars & taverns, throw in some hardware stores, bakeries, novelty boutiques, tattoo parlors, well, you get the idea. And yet all seem to happily coexist. This section of Pittsburgh is indeed unique.

For something different, try ascending the South Side Slopes for a view of the city from above. On second thought maybe you’d better take the winding drive up.

Anchored at opposite ends of Carson Street are two separate contemporary shopping and entertainment destinations. As the street numbers go up on Carson, you’ll come upon South Side Works and this newest and continuing development.

And opposite downtown at the end of the Smithfield Street and along the Monongahela River is Station Square. Here one can also take one of the inclines to the top of Mt. Washington to take in a world famous view.

The South Side Focus appears on pages 25-27.

The other neighborhood that we’d like to direct you to this month is Lawrenceville. The birthplace of Stephen Foster, this community is celebrating his birthday with Doo Dah Days on Saturday, July 12th. Located just above the Strip District, the slope side rowhouses of Lawrenceville start.

This promises to be a special day but any day in July could be a good day to visit Lawrenceville.

For more about Lawrenceville, see pages 16-19.

Summer can be a nice time for a city visit. I’m sure you can find plenty to see and do. Have a wonderful time and a wonderful visit.
